Fleet Christian Mens Group

This group was formed in February 2007 following discussions over some months involving our Group Clergy and Revd David Price of the Church on the Heath. We have now formed a steering group comprising:
Geoff Wickes (P&J), Rod Williamson (AllSts), David Moll (Church on Heath), Paul Doughty (CCC), Ken Evans (Methodist), David Bookham (Baptist), with Andrew Moyse acting as secretary.

Our meetings are on second Saturday of each month at 7:30am, at the Church on the Heath and we welcome men of all churches in Fleet and Crookham, plus members of Fleet Football Club which was initially formed from a christian base.

If you would like to know more, please speak to Geoff, Rod, or Andrew on 617537 or email christian.men@parishoffleet.org.uk

Some 50 men attended the first meeting of the Fleet Christian Men’s Group indicating a strong desire for the group to succeed. Since then numbers have declined although it is difficult to know exactly why since feedback has been limited. In October the steering committee met and agreed to the following key points:

1 We will try to be more pro-active and help in the making up of the meetings.
2 We will try to encourage men to attend by sending out reminders beforehand.
3 From September onwards we will try to include a cooked breakfast.
4 The September meeting will feature an invited speaker on a challenging topic.
5 The October meeting will be Theological Reflection led by Haydon Wilcox.
6 The November meeting is hoping to feature a discussion on 'Men at Work' led by the Industrial Chaplain for Basingstoke.
7 Friday, 23 November, is planned for an evening dinner in a local club or restaurant.
8 We will have a Christmas Party in December.

The Fleet Christian Men’s Group is for men of all faiths and those of none as it seeks to challenge our difficulties as men and as Christians in today’s society. The group is now recognized by Churches Together in Fleet and Crookham and recently a meeting was held in Aldershot for representatives of all of the men’s groups in the area. A follow up meeting is planned for later in the year.

But the bottom line is that unless you are prepared to participate and seek to challenge your faith it will be for nothing. Silently complaining is a singularly unhelpful male trait. If you have any thoughts on any aspect of the group please let myself or other members of the steering group know. Don’t just disappear in apathetic resignation. We are all busy people and the group should allow us to take time out with other men and reflect on our life and how we relate to our fellow humans through our Christian faith.

I look forward to seeing you at the next meeting.
